Sandy How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed

Sandy asks…

Diagnosis of Asthma, how are the early stages of COPD ruled out?

No cough, no wheezing, just shortness of breath and my chest x ray was clear but based on my spirometry results I have been diagnosed with asthma, I can see an improvement in the flow/volume chart (doesn’t dip as much on the graph) after an inhaler but I was under the impression around 10-12% improvement was needed, my figures don’t show that, the graph how ever does show a improvement.

I will be happy to email/send you a link to my full results if needs be.

Kim answers:

There is a definitive test to rule out asthma other than a PFT. You need to see about getting that test.
COPD tends to affect people that are older and for those who have been smoking or have been subjected to a lot of second hand smoke.
COPD has components of asthma. Chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.
You don’t have to have a cough or a wheeze to have asthma. The PFT are not 100%. They also can’t definately determine asthma. What they show is whether or not you have restrictive of obstructive airway disease or both. Emphesema can only be 100% varified at autopsy.
There are several different inhalers out there as well. Some like Albuterol where others like xopenex. There are corticosteroids that they can go on as well that is taken daily in combination of adrenergics to help prevent asthma attacks.
Go ask for the metacholine challenge. That will say yes or no for sure for asthma.

What do you know about Cough Variant Asthma?

My son is 10 months old and has had a cough for about 6 weeks. I have taken him in to the doctor 3 times and every time they say his lungs sound fine. At times over the past 6 weeks, he has had other symptoms that coincide with other illnesses (colds, stomach virus, etc) The cough is there both when he has other sicknesses going on and when he’s healthy.
At a recent appointment, I spoke with his doctor about it and he mentioned something called “cough variant asthma” but said it was too early for him to be diagnosed. I would like more info if anyone else has a child with this.

My husband and sister both had asthma as children, and speaking with my mother, it sounds like my sisters may have been more along the lines of cough variant asthma. Does this run in families?? Does anyone know how young children are when they can be diagnosed? Will they typically outgrow this type of asthma?

8 cropped How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed

Kim answers:

Cough variant is a chronic cough with no corelating chest constriction or bronchial spasms…and normal pfts.

However the most common symptom of ASTHMA is cough. With or without wheezing. Especially in young children and infants. Also in people whose asthma is centered in their SAP’s (as opposed to large airways) this is because it takes more airway to allow wheezing so the smaller the opening (like with younger children or SAP (small air passages) centered asthma you get coughing instead of wheezing. Also with this type of asthma excessive mucus is common which can also cause gagging and/or vomitting/dry heaving and fevers (my oldest son still runs up to 104 degree fever with a severe flare..has had a few flares with over 105 (hospital verified)..my youngest son routinely runs 102 with bad flares). This is because the body can not differentiate between mucus caused by infection and mucus caused by asthma, so reacts as programmed..with a fever to burn out the infection…

I have had asthma since infancy..my oldest had his first flare at 6 days of age..finally diaged at 10 mths (now 27 yrs)…..my youngest son had his first flare at 2 mths of age (now almost 14 yrs)..diaged immediately…and neither have ever wheezed even though both have severe persistant asthma…

My grandson has an appointment at my kids pedi pulmo on Apr. 8…he will 10 mths old…and I fully expect that he will be officially diaged with asthma at that time…he has been on a neb off and on since an emergency room visit in Feb.

Asthma can and is diagnosed from birth on..based on symptoms and family history…but it takes a specialist..a pediatrician or general doctor is not qualified to diagnose or treat asthma. Ask for a referral to a pediatric pulmonologist. The sooner the proper treatment plan is began the less risk of permanent irreversible airway remodeling and/or scarring(which raises the risk of COPD and lung cancer in later life)

for now go to http://www.nationaljewish.org and http://www.keepingkidshealthy.com

also http://www.lungusa.com (or http://www.lungusa.org I never can remember which) and http://www.ginasthma.com

ETA: infant onset asthma is genetic and is not usually outgrown (the only asthma that is *outgrown* is RAD that is from RSV which can cause asthma like symptoms for up to 6 yrs after the infection). However many people do have periods of remission as they age during which time (sometimes for years) they have few if any asthma symptoms or flares. And often they will assume asthma flares in adulthood are allergies, chest colds, bronchitis, etc instead of asthma. Also because asthma is a chronic condition most people with asthma do not recognize that they have constricted breathing. Because to them it is *normal*. The more severe the asthma the less likely the person is to recognize the chronic constriction.

Exercise Induced Asthma?

I’m a sophomore running track & early in the season I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma. I was prescribed 2 inhalers, Symbacort and Albulterol, & At first i had to do symb. twice daily & alb. every 4-6 hours for two weeks, then my doctor said to only do alb. when I needed it, i.e. an asthma attack. Well my season is almost over & I did badly in our county & league meets. I ran the 4×800 meter relay just fine, but both meets I had an asthma attack in the 1 mile, which brings up the point that my first coughing fit in the beginning of the season was in the mile. After I have an attack in the mile & use my inhaler, I feel unusually weak, but I have to run the 2 mile about 20minutes later, so needless to say I’ve been running horrible times in the 1 &2 mile, but not in the 4×800 relay. A few weeks ago I ran a meet where I only ran the 2 mile, not the 1, & I did very well(2nd)
How can I run better by districts? Someone suggested tempo running, how can can I do that alone?
Thanks
I would like to know a way to keep from having an asthma attack in the mile by next Friday, thats 6 days…

Kim answers:

OK so I have the same thing you have! And next year ( ill be in 7th grade ) I’m doing track so what you should do is use you’re inhaler 1 hour or 30 minutes before you run and try not to be nervous. One time I was so nervous my Asthma got worse so try to be positive. If you feel bad just keep running and think about something good. I know that you always think you will do better then ever but then you stink but just be positive and tell you’re self ” I can do this! If I win I will be so proud of my self! ” If you can’t breath stop and put you’re hands on you’re head. Breath in through you’re nose and out you’re mouth. And also the day before you run drink a bunch of water! A BUNCH!!! And ask if you can run with some water. You will need to stop but it will help you’re asthma.

Hope I helped!

Charles asks…

why am i diagnosed with so many disorders?

Hi Everyone!

I’m in my early 20′s and I have been diagnosed with ADD, ODC, Bipolar w/RS (rapid switching), Dyslexia, and Depression. Those are just my mental challenges. When I was younger I had to have the Harrington Rods operations (two metal rods the place on both sides of your spine permanently, making you unable to bend your back), I have had eczema ever since I was a child and asthma that comes and go’s, and I have recently found out I have celiac (allergic to wheat) which makes it harder for me since I’m also a vegetarian (for over 10 years) .

Within the past year I have had staff, scabies, shingles!! (which you normally don’t get till your 60′s), two kidney infections, eczema, UTIs, phenomena, bronchitis, infections on the skin, constant coughing, headaches, and fatigue for months, ulcers, high risk HPV, and i’m sure i’ve had others that i just cant remember right now. I’ve had way over 20 different antibiotics (including creams, pills, syrup, and asthma stuff). I have also gone to many specialist who have prescribed with various medications trying to figure out what is the best combo for me. Currently I’m on lamotrigine, celexa, adderall, wellburtin, and yaz.

I eat very very healthy, all organic, take multi vitamins, get my blood checked 2-3 a year, have seem multiple different types of doctors that are the best in the state, I live in a great environment, people and surroundings. I’m doing well in school so far (only one class, Anatomy and Physiology), and I get plenty of exercise.

I am doing my absolute best to stay positive, however no matter how hard I try there always seems to be some kind of issue with me. I trying to get information from all sources right now so if anyone can help me I will be eternally grateful.

Within the past couple years I have felt a great downfall in my health and I am wondering if there is one overall reason, or am I just that unlucky.

Oh and side note, I’ve been oddly hearing radio sports broadcasters in my ears when its dead silent, sometimes just after listening to soft music in a big room or when i’m falling asleep. Is it just the static? Also my arm or leg is twitching when i’m laying down or relaxed a lot more then usual. Not like its continuous but if i’m sitting on a couch, laying in bed, sitting in a chair etc.

I’m sorry this is a lot of information and a lot of writing, but I’m desperate for some other insight. I really want to be healthy again and get on with my life.

Thanks Everyone!

Donna How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed

Donna asks…

I think my cat has asthma. What can I do?

Hello,
I have 2 garage/outdoor cats. In winter my female cat started coughing. She is still coughing. She doesn’t do it all the time. She turned 1 years old in March. It sounds like this:

The cat in the movie has asthma. I have been doing research and it sounds like my cat has asthma. She went to the vet earlier this month and the vet found out she had tonsillitis. He said that might be the cause of her coughing. Well, the medication is gone now and she is still coughing. And no, it ISN’T a hairball.

How much would tests be to diagnose her? Approximately how much for the asthma medication? We are tight. I think she has an annual appointment in September.

And what drugs help with asthma? I am POSITIVE that she has asthma. Sometimes when she exhales there is a gurgling sound like there is some fluid in her lungs or something.

I went on 1800petmeds.com and there are some allergy medications that you can buy without a prescription. There is a benadryl for cats and dogs. I have heard it helps with feline asthma. Does it? Should we get some? Or should we wait for her annual vet appointment.

Thanks in advance!

AP
and she usually only coughs for a few minutes or just under a minute.
If I could i would take her to the vet. The problem is my parents. We are tight right now. Are there any home remedies for her until she gets to the vet?

8 cropped How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed

Kim answers:

Unfortunately, allergy medications won’t do a thing for asthma. Asthma happens because the respiratory passages in the lungs are all inflamed, often due to some allergic component. But the inflammation can only be reduced by using steroids, as it’s in the lungs and bronchial tubes, rather than in the nasal passages. The other cause of a cough like that is heartworm, and it’s always a possibility if you live in an area where dogs routinely are given heartworm preventative. There is no home treatment for heartworm, either. Asthma is diagnosed initially with x-rays, heartworm with a simple blood test. The cause of the cough needs to be determined before the vet knows how to treat it. Getting allergy medication for her will just be wasting your money I’m afraid.

Helen How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed

Helen asks…

Kevin Trudeau Natural Cures For Heart Disease. Does anyone have an expert stating how to cure it?

My boyfriend is fifteen and is basicly a miracle child. When he was born his first two weeks were spent in a coma. He was blue and his death was certain. The only thing that kept him alive was because his grandmother, who is a multi millionaire along with other ritch relatives, paid to keep him alive. Even with all the money spent, his parents were told he would surely die. When he was still an infant tubes were put inside of his brain to take out liquids that were stuck in his brain from birth. He was diagnosed with a horrribly working heart and set of lungs. His lungs are so horrible that if he smoked one cigarette, his chances of death are at a staggering 50% rate. Smokeing, Marijuana, cocaine and other illegal substances are suicide for him. Although man surgurys were performed on him as a child to keep him alive, his parents were again told that he would die at the age of 8. One day before the surgury that would make him live for only a few years longer, possibly to 11 if he were lucky, the symptoms stopped. My boyfriend feels extremely embarrised about this story and rarely tells it. He never tells me what the disease was or what kind of heart disease it is. He takes 2 pills a day for his heart. He was recently also diagnosed with Asthma. He is an absolute myracle child.

However recently, his heart is begiing to grow worse. The holes in his heart havent healed and his time is begining to run short. Although he does what the doctors say, he is not seeming to get any results.

I have 2 questions. First off, does anyone know what kind of specific heart disease this is that he has? And second, Do you know how to cure it without surgury, medication, etc? We are looking for an herbal remedy or something similar. Something that is not extremely costly.

Im asking something very sincere that comes from my heart. I’m not asking a dumb question about hair products or trying to get help on my history report. I’m asking a question of life and death matters. His family can take him to no more doctors. They have no more money and neither does mine. His ritch families have all gone bankrupt. I’m so afraid I’ll lose him. If you can help me, I’ll be indebted to you forever.

I can understand loseing him at an early age such as 40 or 50. But loseing him at 15 or 16 is not only unfair, but it is absolutely ungodly after everything he has been through just to survive.

8 cropped How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed

Kim answers:

Although I know a lot about circulatory problems, this is essentially something beyond my range of expertise (he’s basically in the “you’re screwed” category).
I do have a few ideas however.
First question:
How much is your boyfriend willing to work/change his living habits?
Ie. If he had to do two hours of tai chi a day would he be willing to?
Second:
Where does he live?

If the problem is coming primarily from a deformed heart, I think his only options are to get a transplant or dramatically reduce the stress on the heart (and lungs). The only way I know to do that is with advanced tai chi/chi gung. Depending on the area he is in, there might be a proficient teacher available who can help him stabilize his problems.

Let me know if your boyfriend is actually motived to go through a lot of work to try and deal with this (suprisingly most people on the brink of death are not). If he is I can start looking about for stuff.
If I run into my friend who knows a lot about weird conditions, I’ll find out if there’s some sort of supplement that can be taken (although I seriously doubt it). Otherwise, I’ll talk to the tai chi people I know about this.

Hope that helped a bit icon neutral How Early Can Asthma Be Diagnosed
